Memotone tightens up the jazzier angles of his sound to pursue a dark, technoid spectre throughout this killer, mazy 2nd LP for Black Acre, following the sweeter, organic tone of his Memoosh hookup with Soosh.
If Bullion had a nightmare about duelling with Arca and The Sprawl, its imagined soundtrack may well resemble the tumultuous and multi-layered Chime Hours; oscillating from tortuous passages of hyper tech-noise to sleep-paralysis doom jazz tension via field recordings and inverted tech-step mutations with the kind of lucid vision that leads to a genuinely suspended disbelief.
By the end of the album’s final, unnervingly eldritch scene, Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, it should come as little surprise that William Yates a.k.a. Memotone also has a neat sideline as a soundtrack composer, most recently working on a horror serial for Eli Roth, which really puts this whole episode in a perfectly shadowy context as some mistily layered phantasia or sonic uchronia where the middle ages bleed into the future, and vice-versa.
